The Choo Choo Train and other Downtown Memories

The Choo Choo Train and other Downtown Memories

Ryen Motzek is an owner of Atlas Skateboarding  in downtown San Mateo and has been instrumental in bringing public art to downtown.

Downtown San Mateo holds a special place in my heart. From growing up on the Peninsula and later on moving to San Francisco, I always found myself drawn to the simple, convenient, colorful downtown. As a child I have fond memories going to Central Park and riding the “Choo Choo” train and walking around with my parents to the local bookstore or cafe. As a teen and into my early twenties, downtown San Mateo was the place where I worked full time at DLXSM (skateshop). I always looked forward to meeting up with friends, helping customers and taking my lunch break to grab a burrito at Pancho Villa or Tres Amigos (RIP). Years later my mother moved to Downtown San Mateo which continued my time visiting and hanging out. Shortly after, I was presented with the opportunity to open my own skateshop with some friends, and decided to keep the tradition going (hanging out in a sweet downtown with good friends and family). Ten years later, I still love coming to Downtown San Mateo. There have definitely been some changes, some great and some that I can’t say I’m too crazy about. But the wholesome energy that drew me to Downtown San Mateo is still going strong.
