04 May It’s National Small Business Week!
May 1-7, 2016 is National Small Business Week. Each year since 1963, National Small Business Week has recognized the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. These passionate and energetic individuals work hard to grow their business, create jobs, and contribute to their communities. This week, San Mateo Mayor Joe Goethals issued a proclamation for the occasion, acknowledging the many small businesses in our city. It reads in part: “from the storefront shops that anchor our downtown streets to the high-tech startups that keep our region and our nation on the cutting edge, small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the cornerstones of our nation’s promise.” See the complete proclamation.
Did you know that more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business? Or that small businesses create nearly two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year? This is definitely something to appreciate, especially in Downtown San Mateo where many small businesses have been born and continue to grow. Go out and support your favorite this week, or visit a new business to see what they’re all about.
